Disney and Lucasfilm announced today at CinemaCon that Star Wars: Episode VII will be coming out in the Summer of 2015. This was expected, but here’s the twist: after Episode VII comes out, Disney will put out a Star Wars film EVERY Summer. Yes, every single Summer. How is that possible production wise? Well let me break it down:
In the Summer of 2015, we’ll be getting an “Episode” Star Wars film that concerns the greater Star Wars universe. Then the next year in 2016 viewers will get to see a solo film based on a single character (rumor is the first one will be either Boba Fett or a young Han Solo), then in 2017 another “Episode” film. This alternating cycle will be continuous, and they have not given us a timeframe for this cycle. This basically means that productions will be going on in tandem with one another (one film will be in production while another is in post-production).
Is this a good idea? I’m not totally convinced. I would love a lot of Star Wars in the cinema just as much as the next guy, but this does concern me a bit about the over quality of the films. Will they stand up? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. This is a huge plan that Disney is rolling out, and with all the other properties Disney holds such as, you know, Marvel, I hope that these films get the time that they deserve.
